This article covers correcting posting attributes on a posted document, using 'Project' as the example. Once a document is posted, its posting attributes can still be corrected - to update an existing value, populate a blank field, or remove a value entirely. If the correction appears to have no effect, the attribute is likely missing from the Chart of Account Rule linked to the account used on that document line. The same method applies to any posting attribute, such as 'Department' or 'Tax band', not only 'Project'.
Why correcting the Project posting attribute has no effect
The Project posting attribute is normally accessible for correction without needing to be included in the Chart of Account Rule for standard use. However, when you attempt an actual correction, Project must be present in the rule attached to the account on that document line.
If it isn't, you can still select 'Project' as the posting attribute in the correction screen and enter a new value, but applying the correction makes no change to the document. This is because the account's Chart of Account Rule has nowhere to store a Project value, so iplicit has nothing to update.
Adding the Project attribute to the Chart of Account Rule
Before the correction will work, add Project to the rule used by the account on the document line.
- Navigate to 'Chart of accounts' and open the account used on the document line, for example '71050: Electricity'
- Note the 'Rule' field - this shows the Chart of Account Rule linked to the account
- Hold 'Ctrl' and select the rule to open it directly
- On the 'Setup' tab, select 'Select'
- Find 'Project' in the 'Available' list and move it to the 'Selected' list
- Select 'Apply'
- Update the rule's 'Description' field to reflect the added attribute, for example changing 'Tax band (R,S) Department (R)' to 'Tax band (R,S) Department (R) Project (O)'
- Select 'Save'.
Updating the description is not required for the fix to work, but it keeps the rule readable for anyone who opens it later.

Correcting the Project posting attribute on the document
With Project now included in the Chart of Account Rule, return to the document and repeat the correction.
- Open the posted document
- Select the options menu ('⋮')
- Select 'Corrections'
- Select 'Posting Attribute'
- Set the 'Posting Attribute' field to 'Project'
- Enter the 'New value'
- Under 'Amend', select 'Detail' (or 'Header', depending on which level needs correcting)
- Select 'Apply'.
The Project value is now updated on the document.
