When creating budgets in iplicit, the method you choose determines how signs (positive/negative values) are handled. This article explains each budget creation option and how sign behaviour works, along with guidance on how variances are displayed.

Budget Creation Methods

1. New Budget

Creates a completely new budget dataset.

  • Values appear exactly as entered
  • No automatic sign reversal is applied
  • Any changes to signs must be made manually.

2. Based on Budget (Old Budget Module)

Uses the legacy budgeting module.

  • Applies any sign‑reversal logic previously used in the old module
  • You can still open the structure screen and reverse signs there, as in the legacy workflow
  • This is the only method that still supports automatic sign reversal.

3. Budget on Template

Creates a budget using a template originally built with the New Budget option.

  • Behaves the same as option one
  • Signs remain as entered and must be adjusted manually if required.

Important Notes

  • For New Budget and Budget on Template, sign changes (positive ↔ negative) must be done manually
  • Based on Budget is the only method that still supports sign reversal through the old module’s structure screen.

Variance Display

The variance shown in reports depends on the selection on the right‑hand side of the screen:

Percentage

  • Shows the proportion of the budget used
  • Overspends appear as values greater than 100%.

Amount

  • Shows the under‑ or overspend as a monetary value.

Why Sign Consistency Matters

Variance calculations rely on the budget signs being correct.
If the signs differ from what the system expects (e.g., income entered as positive instead of negative), the variance and the overall Budget vs Actual comparison may appear distorted.
